As someone who unfortunately used to be a "I'm not like other girls" before the age of social media I can definitely say it's all internalized misogyny.
You get it pounded into your head that anything even remotely conventionally feminine automatically equals shallow and stupid. You like dressing up and makeup? You're shallow and only doing it for male attention, couldn't possibly be for yourself. And obviously it's impossible to like both that and videogames or reading at the same time.
It's more saddening than anything to see women turn on each other like this, even now.
One silver lining, however, are all the fanart that has come from the "average" girl and "other" girl being cute girlfriends 🤣

My friend edited an "I'm not like other girls" meme to say "I'm not like other girls, I'm a boy" as a way of coming out to his brother as trans. The meme was super deep fried level, it was fucking stupid. He's my hero

I used to have this mindset in middle school, and was so proud of all my cool guy friends. And then I was partnered with a 'popular girl' in a class for a project, and we were both awkward, but after a few minutes we realized we were into a lot of the same stuff. We never ended up as friends, but that experience kept me from going down this road. Everyone likes chicken nugs. People who party also have nights where they stay in and binge TV. 50% of all gamers are women now. I fully blame my mom for telling me for years that all women are catty and backstabbing and shallow, which I internalized. All the 'cool guy friends' ended up dropping me anyway when they found out I had no interest in dating any of them.

There was a case study done in the early 2000s that examined homophobia in small town high schools and to (over)simplify a really great book, it basically found that the reason boys were homophobic is because 1. Society vilifies all things feminine and 2. Fear of other men committing violence against them

instead of being rooted purely in mysogeny, i think the "not like most girls" thing came from girls wanting to feel 3 dimensional, unlike the stereotypes of women being all about fashion, makeup, salad, only liking pop music. it does come from mysogeny, but not directly from the girl themself. from the way society has taught girls what is "normal"

i think it comes from the sexist viewpoint that being "feminine" or "girly" is negative. but actually it's not. it's fine to be girly, not girly or somewhere in between: all of which are fine regardless of what genitalia you have.

I love food, hate partying, hate makeup and drama, love Netflix and horror movies but that just makes me the average girl that I am.

So when I was way younger I used to be the "I'm not like other girls." Person. Looking back I realize that I was projecting my own insecurities on other girls. As I grew up and actually got to know what other girls were like I realized. I was always like other girls and that the only reason I felt like I wasn't like them was because of what I was told a girl is ment to be/look like. Also I realized I was Trans, but because I grew up as a girl in a closed minded household I heavy relate to a lot of struggles that girls/women my age were going through. There's so much weird shame that comes with being a girl, and from such a young age. Just forcing of gender roles and stereotypes that honestly made a good portion of young girls feel dehumanized. It was suffocating growing up and isolating. I felt so alone in my struggle to find myself after being forced by myself and others to fit he idea of what a girl/women was.

I wonder when people will stop idolizing Harley Quinn and Jokers relationship. It's extremely abusive, the actual basis of the relationship being Joker manipulating Harley Quinn into throwing her life away and becoming obsessed with him.

When I was 13 or 14 I was one of those "I´m not like other girls"- girls. Consuming those trending books, at that time, movies and social media made it even worse. It´s a trend of young girls trying to not fit in, fit in. (I hope you understand what I mean) It was a hard time for me and I tried to compensate that. So my internalized mysogenic side showed up and made everything worse. Now I know that both sides don´t exist. We´re all some kind of girly or not. It´s not bad or something and I feel so bad for my younger self, that I grew up thinking, I have to hate all other women. Because the other women are less `"cooler" and I have to be more into books, no trends and I have to hate other girls. I thought other girls are a competition. I´m so glad that, that changed.

I didn't even realize this was uploaded 2 years ago because it's so relevant. Ladiesss, there is no need to constantly compare literally every aspect of your life to other women... The only person you should compare yourself to, is you. People are allowed to have different interests and lifestyles, but there's going to be other people who also have similar interests and lifestyles to you, because that's just how the world works...

When I went through my NLOG phase it was to try to reassure myself that I did have something to offer (not to men, just in general) because I felt very inadequate and some degree of shame regarding my own (perceived lack of) femininity.
If I was very obviously not trying to be like other girls, then nobody would be able to tell that I was falling short.
I felt like I wasn't performing "girl" well enough, and that was humiliating.
Being NLOG for me was not about being superior to vapid girly-girls clichés, it was trying to make myself feel less inferior to girls who were confident in their femininity in a way I still haven't managed to be.

Honestly, gamer girls are indeed something some guys cannot comprehand the fact that they exist.
Im not much of a gamer but i remember playing game with my friend during empty period in class and the guys are so so so so so shocked to find girls that plays game.

There was this one guy in my class and I guess he was really out of touch or something? I really liked Minecraft and had a creeper water bottle. I was filling it up and he was like “hey, is that Minecraft on your water bottle?” So I responded with “yes”. He then said “wait, girls know what video games are? I thought they just liked makeup, glitter and dolls. Girls can’t be into computers or anything like that. They shouldn’t be able to turn a computer on. I’m telling the teacher!” I had to wait for the teacher to come and lecture that dude about how not all girls are the stereotypical kind that you see on tv. He apologized and gave me a bunch of gaming strats but I’m still surprised that he didn’t know that lmao

As a goth, I will happily say that I am indeed like other girls. I like to do my nails, shopping, I like shoes and clothes, I love my hair, I love dolls, and I love makeup.

It’s like when a young girl goes out of her way to bash feminism…either she is completely ignorant about the concept (feminism is simply about equality) or she’s been influenced by all the toxic feminism bashing going on by males online. I used to be one lol. Now I’m embracing long skirts. But I don’t want to be seen as a woman, I want to be seen as a person, I feel powerful and confident in skirts, I feel like no one can take that confidence away from me when I wear them, but being seen as and treated like a woman or a lady still doesn’t feel right for me

I also think it's great to celebrate what makes you, you- trendy or not. I think a lot of these girls who say these things fail to realize that people go through phases in their lives.
It also doesn't make you a complex or more intelligent person to vehemently hate any and all things trendy. I feel like these girls who think that, see the world as a me vs. them and anyone (eveyone) else is vapid and "sheeple". And that is such a tragic, one dimensional way of thinking because they are reslly missing out on the beauty of others.

I love at 13:38 that it's just so niche. I think what a person wants (any person) is to feel safe. The 00's and '10s were so focused on driving safety (rightly so) and any person would want a safe vehicle that's also moderately fashionable. The "not like other girls" phenomenon is so dangerous to outcasts as a whole, and the only thing is being nice and not "nice" (being where you just do that for praise and there's no genuineness whatsoever).

Okay, confession time: I guess I used to be one of those girls when I was younger. I was the outsider at school cause I was shy and awkward, I’ve never been too feminine and I guess I just wanted to feel like I was still valid, even if it was in that weird way.
Fast forward to college, on the first days girl approaches me. And GASP! She wears feminine clothes! And makeup! And has a boyfriend! And likes to party! So my initial reaction was “ugh not one of tHoSe”.
Well… we became best friends even though we were so different. We got each other through college, lived together at some point and now we’ve been friends for almost 15 years (oh shit I’m old).
So what I learned is that those “other girls” actually have their unique personalities, hobbies and skills (shocking, I know), that it’s cool to express yourself with fashion and makeup (I still don’t but I admire people who are good with makeup).
We’re all just people in the end. Maybe take some time to get to know them.

Here's something that might shock these "not like other girls" girls. Most of these things are things that girls like me, who like nice dinners, make up and grew up watching Disney also like. I like nice restaurants and I also like a good bar. I like make-up and jewelry, but I also like to be comfortable in a hoodie. I like Disney and I also like Crime Dramas. You aren't unique for wanting to go to Denny's, or not wearing make-up or playing video games. Other girls like that stuff too. Just because we enjoy things you don't doesn't mean we aren't also unique. Everyone is unique in their own way, but liking to eat chicken nuggets and wear comfort clothes isn't what makes you unique because a lot of people do that.
