I was really curious so I googled where Krystal is now. Turns out she has undiagnosed BPD, and once she got proper treatment for it, and realised what the issues were, she did legitimately improve. She was ashamed of her behaviour back then, but sees it as a wakeup call.

    • ani
      ani 20 dni temu +1

@Peighness Honourchign it’s not an excuse, it’s an explanation for her behavior. (Also it’s Borderline Personality Disorder, not Bipolar.) BPD can cause impulsivity and distort decision making. There is proof that impulsivity can cause more reckless driving habits, because people with ADHD also face the same issues when it comes to driving, and it has been proven that people with ADHD are more likely to get in car wrecks or drive recklessly because of impulsivity.

It really bothers me that ‘I drink and drive’ is portrayed a weird, almost-neutral quirk and not a serious and selfish crime. Prison time for drunk drivers. There’s never an excuse.

    • Lauren W

Yeah literally one of the most irresponsible selfish and dangerous things you can do. If you can't drive without being drunk to "calm your nerves" then you shouldn't fucking drive. Just to let people know, Canada's worst driver was actually part of an international franchise. Quite a few countries had or still have their own versions, and they all copied the original Britain's worst driver. Canada's version is just better known than most because it was around for 14 seasons and got popular enough to spark spin offs also hosted by Younghusband.
In other words, blame the UK, not Canada.
On an unrelated note, they called it the rehab center because of a different definition of rehab: "the action of restoring someone to former privileges or reputation after a period of disfavor." The premise of the show is that the bad drivers earn back their licenses once they show improvement(Thus "restoring" their reputation and driving privileges). However, they legally cannot destroy people's licenses. They do encourage them to give up driving, and drivers appearing on the show have been known to destroy their own license, but it's very much illegal to just cut up or burn someone else's driver's license. Even taking the licenses away is purely symbolic because of those laws.
Their goal is to reform bad drivers while emphasizing that they should have never gotten their license(something Krystal commented on, saying she didn't even know how she passed her driving test), and encouraging those they can't teach to give up driving.
On a related note, Krystal was later diagnosed with BDP, which was a large factor in both her horrific attitude and dangerous driving, and is supposedly doing much better, both in terms of mental health and driving. The reality check that the show gave her motivated her to improve as a driver and as a person, as well as get help that she very much needed, and I think that's pretty cool. Obviously, not all the worst drivers had happy endings. Some of them did genuinely learn nothing and still haven't, and those are the ones that are the most terrifying. But it did legitimately help some people, and for that I say, respect to Younghusband and the numerous judges throughout the years for that.

hey we have this same show in Finland too! Same premise, except they have their own little driving area so theyre not endangering the public. I remember one contestant was a really old granny that had impaired vision iirc, and she ended up getting her license taken away. It was a mutual decision with her, her family, the showrunners (and the government ofc), and was a really sweet moment imo :) she said herself thats its for the best since shes not getting any better, and was so old anyway. oh well

I have manic depression, PTSD, anxiety, panic attacks, suicidal depression, etc. War child, refugee, then incurably ill (physically).
So in Canada, apparently, I can just go wreck some ppl's lives.. simply coz I LITERALLY never thought to seek help & I'm like 45 at this point.... and then my family sent me on a TV show, instead of maybe listening to my issues... and I accepted. Yep. That's how that works! Most definitely. 👍
I drove whole of USA from coast to coast + Canada Ontario & Quebec, never a single accident. Some people call me their best friend coz I have compassion & self awareness. There's a difference between being a mean/selfish person & being sick.
I can't believe they let these people drive on a highway. I know that stretch (if they're going from NF to Toronto) and I'm scared of it because of the bigass bridge which always makes your car shake.. and the wind is so bad you're struggling to keep to your own lane the whole time on it. Da fuq they're doing sending them on QEW?

@daphne hi! a person with bpd. bpd doesn’t really cause someone to be mean. it intensifies emotions, so if someone is kind or empathetic, it intensifies that too. bpd really isn’t an excuse to act a certain way, and it actually helps the mental illness to accept responsibility.

@Grace Batterson That’s neither here nor there tho. The big point is she should have never been able to have a license in the first place. If you are so impulsive that you can’t stay on the road you don’t deserve to ever drive again. Saying this as someone who has BPD.

THANK YOU Kurtis.. I was in driving school for about 2,5 years. I passed the theoretical test at the first time, but failed the practical part 4 times. Not because i wasnt prepared enough. But because i was terrified. I was scared to drive that fast. I was scared, knowing that i am responsible to watch out, not to hurt anyone. Especially now, knowing i had adhd my whole life it seems just irresponsible to let me drive a freaking car. I just couldnt concentrate at all. And my Driving teacher expected me to drive up to 180kmh on the Autobahn, surrounded by drivers that went up to 220kmh. Germany is just crazy with theire speeding. Just one tiny movement, and I could literally kill several people..
Its sad, that most of us are just expected to have a licence. When someone would have given me the opportunity to test, whether I am suitable or not for driving, i maybe wouldnt have wasted THOUSANDS of Euros from my parents. I still feel so awfull for not making it through. And my parents obviosly still point it out some times, that they are disapointed, that i didnt stuck to it, until i got my liscence. I am so ashamed, even though i shouldnt have to.

the funny thing about the shoemaker joke is that’s exactly how a lot of last names came to be , they’re called occupational surnames. For instance John the baker became John baker, Jack the blacksmith became Jack Smith, and Frodo the hunter became Frodo Hunter. Other occupational lastnames are Walker, Cook, Baxter(or Bakster which was the name for a women baker), and carpenter. There are also names that end in “son” that literally just mean “son of ____” (johnson, erikson, peterson, carlson)

Once I was asleep in the backseat and we got t-boned while going decently fast because the other car ran the stop sign. My drink went all over me, my sister hit her head on the dashboard and sprained her wrist, and my mother got whip lash.

Oh my gosh I remember driving school. We had two students to a teacher and the girl I was with was like, Crystal level. When she was behind the wheel we spent 50% of the time in the opposite lane, and the other 50% up on the sidewalk or dangling off the road into the dirt. We were doing the whole "figure 8s around light posts in a parking lot" thing and the instructor literally had to engage her emergency brakes because we were headed straight into a pole, at like 5 mph, literally she could have barely hit the brakes, or just slightly turned the wheel. Nothing. That Bob's Burgers scene where Tina hits the car? Like that. I thought I was going to die.

I really appreciate the acknowledgment of anxiety around driving. I’m only 17 but living in the US the second you turn 16 there’s this immense pressure to get your license. Even when you’re 15 it’s “so do you have your permit yet”. I have an anxiety disorder and find it incredibly difficult to drive. I’ve tried to practice a few times (in an empty parking lot don’t worry lmao) but it always ends in a panic attack. I feel incredibly guilty and frustrated with constantly being asked when I’m getting my license and mocked that I don’t have it. Public transportation and infrastructure is shit in most the US so it can be challenging to get around on your own without a car (Uber exists but that’s a whole other anxiety inducer). People don’t ever seem to understand why I can’t get my license so I really appreciate the attitude towards driving with anxiety here.

same, im 16 and don't have my license or permit and haven't even done drivers ed, people ask me why and they say it doesn't make sense and that i'd probably be a good driver-
i bike everywhere, and i feel like cyclists get to experience the worst of the worst drivers. i just don't wanna be the guy going 60 in a school zone distracted on his phone, or the guy who doesn't see the middle schooler on a bike and turns his semi nearly running the kid over, or the guy who loses control of his car brakes on the mountain roads and causes a mass car crash and i just dont trust myself enough to not accidentally be that guy.
not to mention, cars are so expensive with insurance and gas and maintenance costs, and it's cheaper to take public transport

Yeah I got my license a few months ago to drive myself to school. I had multiple panic attacks when I was learning to drive and didn’t ever want to get back in the driver’s seat. But now I have my license and drive every day. The best advice I can give is that it gets easier the more you do it. And never be afraid to pull over if you need to. Driving is still scary, and I make a lot of mistakes, but I’ve come so far. Best of luck to you!

Hey Kurtis, I feel where you're coming from with this video but I don't think you've really given the show a chance. If you consider their goal, to improve road safety through cognitive science, proper driving technique, and public awareness, a tv show like this makes a lot of sense. Pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, which I support, is still a fringe issue in North America. I think it's good that people are using effective methods to make our current solution safer.
I can attest to this show's effectiveness personally. A friend introduced me to this show in college, a time when I was driving long distances regularly and often made decisions that put myself and others at risk on the road. Sometimes we as people really do need a slap in the face to remind us to be empathetic. It's impossible to know, but this show may have even saved my life or stopped me from killing someone. I think that's important and good.

This is the video I always knew I needed, you are not thinking about this too hard. People are so flippant when it comes to the road, they are selfish pricks and I’ll always hate them all. My mum was almost killed, in a coma for 3 months and has lasting brain and physical injury more than 20 years later. Her life and the lives of her whole family were changed because some guy who was no longer legally equip to drive, hit my mum who was a pedestrian on a pedestrian crossing. He drove off and I can only imagine was unharmed while my mum lay dying on the road. They are terrible, awful, selfish people.
Edit* bit hectic, sorry, but sometimes I just can’t imagine irresponsible drivers even thinking to change their behaviour until after they’ve already either killed or forever injured someone else, let alone themselves.
